[Teacher-talklearning] Workshop #9

 I found the middle school classroom in this segment of the workshop
particularly interesting. In the featured activity, students provided
feedback about their learning experiences to student teachers. To me, this
was especially interesting as an approach to building metacognitive skills
in students. In this instance, student teachers listened to students give
feedback about what they learned and how they learned it, during a class
Writer’s Workshop. This struck me as a particularly interesting and
different approach to students reflecting on their own learning experience.
I have seen other examples of attempts to solicit feedback about student
learning experiences, such as surveys and student conferences. But this
activity added another layer to the value of paying attention to their
learning. Students in this classroom had a purpose for learning beyond
themselves. Not only did they have a purpose for accepting responsibility
for their learning for its own sake, but they also had a purpose for paying
attention to how they learned and what they learned so that they could
facilitate growth in future teachers. The whole experience was built on
students reflecting on their learning experience. I think it was
particularly important that the teacher made certain that the class had a
shared definition of what it means to reflect.
