[Teacher-talklearning] workshop 6: culturally-responsive teaching
This video defined culturally responsive teaching as being "aware of
thecultural and/or ethnic backgrounds of students...and bringing in
activities andinformation that... will be relevant to their lives and
personal to them."
As a grade level Principal in a very diverse highschool (racially,
ethnically, economically) culturally responsive practices arekey to
building and district level discussions. Most recently, an achievementgap
which illustrates racial minorities and bilingual students simply do
notachieve at equitable rates has shed light on instructional practices in
I thought that some of the culturally-relevant activities within the video
were particularly engaging and thought provoking. Anything which connects
family members such as the activity where family members come to school to
read autobiographies aloud to class, are valuable on a number of levels.
They certainly meet the expressed purpose of connecting students to
learning and making the experience relevant and personal to them.
Life is as dear to a mute creature as it is to man. Just as one wants
