[Channel-talklife] What is life? Is a spinach leaf alive?
Hello,
My name is Miriam. I live in Utah. I am taking this class to renew my
teaching certificate. I home school. I have taken 2 other Annenberg
classes a few years ago. I took one about Energy that was fascinating. I
am amazed at the video presentations for the class. Often I think that
small clips from the classes would be perfect for the classroom experience.
I am going to do the Butterfly and Brassica system for Bottle Biology. I am
tempted to do all 4, but time is limited. I am confused about ordering the
Brassica. Do we order 50 seeds? I had a time figuring it out on the web
site and haven't ordered it yet.
I had a disscussion about what is life with my 11 yr old son. He enjoyed
the conversation but wanted me to just give him the answer. I didn't, but
continued the discussion the next day. I had him make a chart and divide up
different things into Alive, Dead, and Non living. He listed Cooked seeds
under dead. We had discussion about dried peas earlier, so that was
important to him. Later we discussed our spinach leaves at dinner. Were
they still alive? They were picked weeks ago, but some plants can be picked
then put in a jar of water and roots grow and then it can be planted and
grow. I really don't know myself if lettuce, spinach, broccoli, and other
picked leaves and such are still alive. Perhaps they are as one person said
"deadish" What do you all think?
Miriam
