[Channel-talkearthspace] Thoughts on Session #6

I live in Iowa and the only main land form that surrounds the area that
I live in is the Loess Hills of Sioux City. These hills contain a rare
soil that is only found in one other place. This soil is Loess, which I
guess could be described as a type of clay material. Some companies use
it to make bricks. The students around here take it for granted and it
is hard to get them excited about it. One thing I try to do when we
study the prairie is bring in DNR experts that are knowledge able about
the land and can talk to students as well as bring samples of this rare
and important soil. The students love the visit and always have great
questions. The Big Sioux River is another focus of discussion during
this unit because it has changed so much. It much wider and deeper than
it used to be and the students find it interesting that it was the main
mode of transpiration at one time. We do a river study with the
students and the water quality. The students learn a lot from their
experiences and they love the hands on activity that takes place. I am
also fortunate enough to have my own prairie land behind our school that
we use to discover and identify the different prairie grasses that
exist, the habitats that form on the land, and just to see how tall the
grass can get and used to be. The students and I burned the prairie
this fall to help it come back thicker and more full this spring. We
are anxious to see what becomes of the prairie as it replenishes itself.

Any thoughts on session #6......

Neal Utesch
