You can introduce the idea of changing representations of history to your students, using Pocahontas or other figures such as Christopher Columbus, Thomas Jefferson, Sacajawea, and Nat Turner. All of these individuals have been presented in radically different ways during different eras of American history. Events such as the Boston Tea Party, the Salem witch trials, and the Battle of the Alamo also provide good examples of this phenomenon, since they have been alternately ignored and celebrated depending on the needs of each new generation.
