Dear Annenberg Channel Workshop/Course Facilitators and Participants:
I am writing to inform you of a major change in the delivery of the Annenberg Channel that will take place next year. On October 1, 2008, satellite delivery and viewer support of the Annenberg Channel will cease. Annenberg programs will continue to be available to viewers both as online video-on-demand and in hard copy. If you have been watching Annenberg programs on a local cable or public access channel, and you do not have broadband Internet access, you should check to see if they will continue to broadcast previously recorded programming. Please note that even after the satellite feed has ended, your rights to use all the Annenberg programs that you may have recorded from the Channel for professional development will continue. New programs will continue to be created and will be available for viewing online and for purchase.
Our decision to make this change was influenced in large part by the growing number of teachers who view our videos directly from our Web site, www.learner.org, through broadband streaming. Access to broadband Internet service has grown steadily since we launched the Annenberg Channel in 1997. That has given us the opportunity to build comprehensive online learning opportunities for teachers and learners that conveniently locate the video material in the same place as the text and support materials. Over the past three years alone, the number of visits to learner.org has climbed to nearly 12 million per month. Going forward, we feel that concentrating our efforts on this comprehensive, interactive distribution strategy represents the best way to serve our users.
After September 30, 2008, there will no longer be staff in place to take workshop or course registrations, provide certificates of participation, or provide information about running professional development workshops or courses. We are sharing the news with you about this change as early as possible in an effort to lessen the disruption to your training programs. Groups of educators can register until March 31, 2008. The Group Attendance Form must be submitted prior to June 1 and certificates will be issued through June 30, 2008. After June 30, 2008, no certificates will be provided. Graduate credit through Colorado State University and Southern Oregon University will continue to be available after the certificate program ceases.
Although the certificate program will not be available, we encourage you to continue to use Annenberg Media workshops and courses for recertification and highly qualified teacher status. Contact your school district or the State Department of Education, to find out if they will grant a certificate for your participation.
