Invite an Observer into Your Classroom

One technique you can use to examine your teaching is to invite an observer into your classroom. This person could be a colleague, a supervisor, or a student teacher. It's helpful to give the observer something specific to watch and listen for, such as the interactions among students. It can sometimes be difficult to listen to feedback from an observer, but such information is remarkably valuable in its objectivity.

Tips for inviting an observer into your classroom:

• Be very clear and specific about what you want the observer to provide feedback on.
• If the observer is unfamiliar with your class or your students, have him/her take notes or draw diagrams for later reference.
• Set aside time to discuss the findings as soon as possible after the observation.
• Try not to be defensive when receiving feedback and suggestions from the observer.
• If the observer is a teacher, offer to observe his or her classroom.
