Hi Lourdes, It's nice that you have those books, but you don't have to read them for this class. It is good exposure to introduce and reintroduce those books to teachers. I'm sure we will use some of those books in the future. My class is continuing to read Gifted Hands and I am applying and infusing what I'm learning from this workshop within my class. Some of my students have already read some of those novels. I'm learning quite a bit from these workshops.

Hi, my name is Lourdes Gomez-Barrio.
I have exchanged some words with some of you, but it is now that I can start seriouly with this workshop.
I have bought and read "Flowers for Algernon" and "A Lesson Before Dying". I have also bought "Ceremony" and "To Kill a Mockingbird", but I haven't had enough time yet.
My confesion: I have felt very motivated when listened to the authors talking about their work. I think that now and then, everybody have thought about becoming a writer, and I have thought about it as well. There are so many things we could share about our lives! It happens to those who came to this country looking forward a better life. My students are ESE and most all of them are hispanic. In my experience, my students like very much any book related with muliculturalism, people with any kind of disability, discrimination, etc. We have read "Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl". I also gave them the opportunity to watch the movie. They enjoyed the movie so much! Even though it is not a funny one, they were static, listening with all their bodies. After the movie, they talked and wrote about their personal opinions. All of them are able to retell this story with their own words. Then, I agree with the fact that the novel's owner is that person that reads and enjoys it. Once the author releases his/her work, he/she lost it.
Now I'm planning to read "Flowers for Algernon", and I am pretty sure that my students will enjoy this book.
