[Channel-talkchemistry] Reactions in chemistry workshop #8
Using flame test to identify an unknown compound is a standard activity when
discussing quantum mechanics. I think the twists that Mr. DeGennaro
includes for the students to interpret a persons observations and
conclusions of a chemical explosion at a factory was a good opportunity for
apply concepts. The student discussion and presentation during this
activity showed that they understood what was going on during the flame test
activity and how it can be applied. I have used the electric pickle
demonstration to talk about electron movement as related to quantum
mechanics and also to discuss ionic bonds and mobile ions to move current.
The other activity involved identifying an unknown in a solution using
precipitation reactions involves applying concepts. I think it is important
to step back and let the students "figure it out." I really have to catch
myself from telling the students the answers when they are attempting to
problem solve differently than what I see as the correct solution. In the
analyzing unknown activity there was a lot of student discussion, with
students helping work through misunderstandings.
