[Channel-talkchemistry] Reactions in chemistry workshop #6
It is important for teachers to make connections between science classes.
Areas that chemistry and biology can be connected is with the discussions of
acids and bases with buffer systems in our body, blood, and pH as it relates
to stomach acid. The discussion of reaction kinetics and how enzymes and
catalyists work to speed up a reaction with out being changed permanently.
The role of energy in chemical reactions and how that energy is used to run
the body's systems. In addition discussions on biological systems used in
other areas of students life. In waste water treatment plants bacteria is
used to convert toxic waste into safe natural forms of nitrogen, carbon
dioxide and water.
"One of the major ways to reduce pollution is to move the elemental balance
of chemical technology closer to the elemental balance of life, wherever
possible." The shift of technology to reduce pollution by more and more
natural means. The example earlier with waste water treatments plants is
one example. The use of photogalvanic cells and wind power reduce the need
for burning coal and oil for energy. National Public Radio aired a story of
the use of wind mills, the possible change in world air currents and the
effect on global temperatures. Scientists calculated that if enough wind
mills where used to generate the world's energy needs the change would
include a slight cooling at the poles and slight warming at the equator.
This small change would be greatly off set from the reduction of green house
gases produced by the combustion of hydrocarbons.
