I thought the environmental unit showed great practical application of what we are teaching in class. The more ties to real life uses, the better. I would hope to try the aluminum recycling; however I am a little leary of the KOH and H2SO4 in the alum production. I will have to go online and check the concentrations used before would let my classes loose with them.
Again the lake was a great field trip but I don't know if I would be comfortable just letting my classes loose around a body of water.. not that I don't trust them, but we are liable. I was thinking that the students would get as much out of testing samples brought from their neighborhood, and certainly private well water users should bring their water in for testing.
The brown sludge used for water purification was wonderful. The teacher had to have told the students ahead of time that it was home made because they had no problem working with it! The interview with the lab analyst told the real story and would be a valuable piece to show the students.
