Tuning the DSR 4500X Model

The Digicipher DSR-4500X is the Motorola replacement IRD for theDSR-4000/1 models. This unit was primarily designed for a cable provider's needs. Following is a general setup guide.

This two-rack unit IRD has (8) L-band inputs, Aux bypass audio/ video inputs and four audio outputs. Data connector outputs include Cue tone, Isoc (Sync data) and Async. Three contact relay interfaces are provided. ASI and DHEI (Digicable Headend Expansion Interface) outputs are also included.

Setup steps for reception of PTV Digicipher programming: Cable the unit for your needs. A monitor connection to the 'OSD Vid' out is helpful to view diagnostic information. The following steps presume AMC-3 Ku (V) to RF-1 and AMC-3 Ku (H) to RF-2. It's recommended that a front panel reset be done first.

To do a "Factory default reset" From the front panel use the arrow buttons to select 'Unit control' and press the ENTER button. Arrow to "Factory Reset" and press ENTER. Arrow up/down to indicate "Yes". Press ENTER. Allow a few seconds for the IRD to reset.

Unit Address Number- Each IRD's Unit address number (U/A) must be submitted to PBS for inclusion in the Entitlement Management System for "authorization". The U/A may be found by arrowing to 'Status' on the 'Main Menu' and pressing ENTER. Arrow Left/Right to select the page with the Unit Address Number. This is a one-time step. If the unit address number has not been submitted to the Annenberg Channel, call 1-800-228-8030 x 2.

Programming the IRD

To define RF-2 to AMC-3 KU Horizontal:
From the front panel use the arrow buttons to select 'RF Ports' and press ENTER. Select 'Port 2 Setup' using the gray button at the bottom right of the display (Next function). Arrow to the 'Satellite' line, press ENTER. Press the Up/Down button until "Undefined" appears. Press the RIGHT arrow once, dashes appear. Using the Up/Down, Left/Right buttons label the input- PBS. Press the gray button at the bottom left of the display once to save. Next arrow to the 'Polarity' line, press ENTER. Press the Up/Down button to select "Horizontal". Press the gray button at the bottom left of the display once to save.

Press the LEFT arrow to change the display to the "Active Port" menu.
Arrow to the 'Active port' line and press ENTER. Use the Up/Down arrow to select the port being defined (2) and press the gray button at the bottom left of the display once to save. Arrow down to the 'Frequency' line and press ENTER. Arrow Up/Down until "Ku-Band 1010.00 MHz" is displayed. Press the RIGHT arrow once to move to the frequency value. Using the Up/Down, Left/Right buttons, change the frequency to 1400.75 MHz. Press the left gray button at the bottom of the display to save. Arrow down to the 'Symbol:Code:Bit' line and press ENTER. Use the up arrow to select 3.25:3/4:Combined and press the gray button at the display bottom left to save.

The IRD should now tune and acquire to the DC II signal. Allow 90 seconds for the virtual channel map to load. Note- the "Authorization" light will not be illuminated yet.

Press the bottom gray button to return to the "Main Menu".

Arrow to the 'Channels' line and press ENTER. Arrow down to 'VCT ID' and press ENTER. Use the Up/Down button to select < 15 >. Press the gray button at the display bottom to save. Arrow to the 'Channel Number' line and press ENTER. Use the Up/Down buttons to scroll through the "mapped" channels until the desired number is indicated (511-514). Alternately, press the RIGHT arrow to manually set the desired channel number. Press ENTER to select. The IRD's "Authorized" light should illuminate and the service is outputted in a few seconds.

Continue setup:

From the Main Menu and using the previous button procedures, set Video, Audio, Data, etc. choices as desired for your site.

Unit information is available from the 'OSD Vid' output by selecting 'Diagnostics' from the 'Main Menu', setting 'Diagnostics Screen' to "On" and using the Up/Down buttons to select the desired menu. Alternately, a two-page "Fast Facts" display may be viewed by pressing the 'OSD' button on the front panel. Also available from the Diagnostics menu are internally generated audio and video test signals.

Note: The "Satellite" name entry should be the same as used in the provider's Virtual Channel Map. (PBS)

The Operations Manual suggests changing all unused 'RF Ports' to "Undefined". Under 'Unit Control', set 'Acq recovery' to "disable" for use with PTV
