We've just observed a class as they began to create graphic representations of their own survey data. Now we'd like you to write about opportunities for students to create and use representations to organize, record, and communicate mathematical ideas. As you make your journal entry, use the material you've just seen and read as a context.
Questions to write and reflect about:
- What is the importance of having students design and conduct their own surveys? What aspects of representation do they gain experience with?
- What are the benefits to students and to their teacher of an assignment asking them to interpret and critique a classmate's graph or one that appeared in the newspaper?
- How does this task enable students to see the importance of making careful choices about which form of representation to use in order to communicate information?
