Applying Communication
Introduction | Bubble Gum Contest | Extending the Activity | Problem Reflection | Classroom Practice | Communication in Action | Classroom Checklist | Your Journal

Now that you have finished working on the Bubble Gum Contest problem, reflect on the following questions:

  • Imagine that two of your goals are to help your students develop meaning for the subdivisions and points on a number line and to gain skill in using the number line as a tool for comparing ratios. How would you place an emphasis on communication as you work with your students?
  • How can communication about ratios and fractions be enhanced through the use of oral and written language, number lines, and fraction symbols?
  • What follow-up activities related to communicating about a number line might you suggest?
