The disadvantage is that abstract ideas do not often catch the interest of students like "real-world" problems. It is important for students to see the use of geometry in the world around them, not just something that happens in a classroom one period a day.
The advantage is that students are not hindered by "real-world" constraints. By working in the abstract they are able to immediately change the size of sides or angles and then evaluate the effect that had. So the students can focus more on the process or rule than worry able immediate applecation.
