Channel-Talk for The Learning Classroom

Re: [Channel-talklearning] Adding my name to the Learning Classroom

I have enjoyed it a lot. The reflections questions have brought out things
that I did know I was drawing on. Talk about metacognition.

My favorite sessions have been #1, on developmentally appropriate tasks and
spiraling learning, 8 on cognitive apprenticeships, 9 on metacognition, and
11 on transfer.

I guess # 11 was my favorite because it was so useful to me ‹ the students I
teach are typically close to graduation, and need all the transferable
skills they can get. After teaching college chemistry for 5 years, I know
what freshman are like when they think they learned everything in the world
in high school, and are ŗking of the hill˛ and then face college. I want to
help my students be better prepared.

My second favorite was 9, because I was thinking to myself the whole time˛ I
wish my high school teachers had talked to us and taught us about this.˛ I
feel that I am one of those students who could have gotten a lot out of
that. I was a quiet thinker type, and would have enjoyed that type of
process and learning.

The cognitive apprenticeship discussion in #8 is really interesting. I wish
there were still more areas of life where formal apprenticeships were in
progress. That type of process with a personal relationship suits so many
areas and so many peoplešs learning styles. Teaching would be a good area to
have long term cognitive apprenticeships. Donšt really know what that would
look like.

Anyway, I guess this is a lot in one email, but I will be sending my
coursework tomorrow, so I wanted to give you the thoughts while they are
still clear in my mind.
