We discussed this in class. Redeye is caused when the light from the flash of the camera hits the blood vessels on the retina. In order to reduce redeye, the light from the flash from the camera is moved slightly so that it doesn't hit the retina.

Red eye is caused by the light of the flash hitting the blood vessles in the retina of the eye. One way to reduce this effect is by moving the flash attachment away from the lens. The way the reduce "red eye function" on a camera works is by sending out light, either a dedicated smaller light or by sequencing the flash attachment prior to the actual picture being taken. This causes the pupil of the eye to close somewhat and reduce the effect of red eye.
