Subject: How Children Learn

This class has reaffirmed my belief on how children learn through inquiry. However, I find myself getting under a time crunch to get things taught and have my students prepared for the following year. I also worry about my class being well rounded (knowing a variety of strategies) in math, including the algorythm, in case there are teachers that only accept that method. Does anyone else feel like this?

I understand your concerns and feel the same way. In our discussions today during the fourth workshop we discussed that very thing. As a group we decided that we need to focus the inquiry based instruction we set up for our students. I would personally love to give students the opportunity to fully explore personal curiosities and questions they have regarding a concept or idea we are studying. However, with time restraints I find myself framing the opportunities for inquiry. I present a problem and allow for questions within that problem. I always answer my student's questions with another question. This leaves them truly thinking on their own and invested in what they are learning. However, I do wish there was more time and flexibility for independent inquiry.
