Subject: Moon Journal - Challenges/Delights
Message:
Keeping a journal, log, or notebook over time requires a lot of discipline for a naturally random person like me. Once I finally started, though, a wondrous thing happened. After the first observation, which included establishing a skyline, determining point-of-view, and making my first entry, I found myself thinking about the moon during the next day. I wondered where it would be that night in relation to the first night's position. And I was pleasantly surprised at what I had already learned -- I could predict about where the moon would be; I knew for sure where "west" was in relation to my home and my viewing position; and I found myself smiling all the way home from work, anticipating with delight the arrival of my 'viewing time'. I think I am learning more than just about the moon. I'm learning about the value of consistency, that focus on one content area doesn't exclude other learning, and I'm experiencing...again the delight that comes from finding out things for myself. What else will I learn tonight? And what will I think and wonder about that never occured to me to even question before?

I enjoyed keeping a moon journal. Although, many nights the moon was not visible. When it was, I found it fascinating.
The children in my second grade class are now keeping a moon journal. They are enjoying it too.

One of the questions we had was in regard to the moon's color.Does it change for any particular reason? What does it mean when it is very yellow?

Subject: Revisiting the Old Farmer's Almanac
Message:
Because our group met in the media center, I was able to browse a copy of the Old Farmer's Almanac. Having recently moved to New England, it was serendipitous to find that all the solar and lunar risings and settings were based on Boston time. Reading this periodical was most informative. I recommend that if you are not familiar with it, find a copy and it will fill in the blanks for those days when observation of the moon was not possible during the past two months.

The results show that we really don't know what happens to the moon! We think we notice it, but really don't. One thing I found surprising is that there were hardly any "Don't know" answers! We think we know it all!
Does any one know what the moon that is visible during the day is called?
