EventMonarch PEAK Migration
Date of Sighting08/16/01
CommentsPeak migration for Sault Ste. Marie was August 16th. On September 2nd I have just returned from my second journey along the north shore of Lake Superior and Lake Huron, from Wawa, following Superior to Sault Ste. Marie, and then along the north shore of Lake Huron, Georgian Bay, and then along the French River to Lake Nipissing and south-east through Algonquin Park. In early August I travelled the same route and encountered Monarchs every ten minutes or more frequently from North Bay to Wawa. On my second journey which just ended on Sunday Sept. 2, I saw virtually no monarchs along the highway - the weather in early August was extremely hot and dry. This past weekend, the weather was sunny, warm days with cool nights, and I was just ahead of a low pressure system. I anticipated many more monarchs this week. I am now teaching up in Bancroft Ontario for the fall and winter. We are searching for signs of larvae and adults.
