EventMonarch Migration Sighting
Date of Sighting08/10/01
CommentsMonarchs were on the move over Lake Superior! On Friday, at approximately 12:30 PM, we noticed a tremendous ravel of monarchs migrating over Lake Superior. From the deck of a tour boat just north of Silver Creek Tunnel, near Two Harbors, MN (Lake Cty.) we initially observed monarchs flying in a westerly direction at a rate of about 60 monarchs per minute. The boat was traveling north at about 10 m.p.h. As we continued to move north, the number of monarchs crossing over us grew to the thousands! For about 10 minutes, monarchs by the thousands were above and all around us flying towards the west shore. Skies were partly cloudy and winds were from the East at a speed of 8 knots (~9 m.p.h.) (Of course I wish we could have stopped the boat and just sat in one place to observe just how long this heavy stream of migrating monarchs would have continued!)
