| Event | Monarch Migration Sighting |
| Date of Sighting | 08/04/01 |
| Comments | Minnesota Naturalist Jim Gilbert reports signs of an early beginning to the migration in Minnesota: "The monarchs are on the move. I saw them going by here our yard here on the shore of Leech Lake. They were going by singly and they were definitely heading south." Even earlier observations indicate aggregations began in late July: "On Monday, July 30 I counted 7-9 monarchs all heading south while on a walk from 9-9:30 am. A knowledgeable caller to WCCO radio saw several gathering in single tree on 7/28 in Paynesville, MN (75 miles northwest of the Twin Cities)." |
