EventMonarch PEAK Migration
Date of Sighting10/04/00
CommentsPeabody Children have become very aware of monarch butterflies in our neighborhood, Capitol Hill in Washington, D. C.. Capria from Mr. Watson's class saw two on a sunny warm day 9/14/00 at 8th and C Streets, NE, and two more at Third and G Streets, NE on 9/17. Shawnta saw three on 9/24/00, another warm and sunny day, on our school playground. She said, "They have very pretty colors." Tyquia saw six at the neighboring Stuart Hobson Middle School on 9/27, another warm and sunny day. (We've had great weather). Tyquia said, "The beautiful monarchs were flying". While on the playground on 10/4 the whole class saw two more and while at the Stanton Park, across from the school, on October 3, they saw six more. That day was cool, windy and 70 degrees or so. The butterflies were resting and flying and were counted within just a few minutes of each other. Mr. Burst's class is also watching for butterflies on their way to Mexico. Grace reported for the class that they saw one.
