EventMonarch PEAK Migration
Date of Sighting09/27/00
CommentsFirst large numbers of monarchs moving through. My two daughters, Caitlyn, age 9 and Kylie, age 5, my wife, and I watched about 50 or so pass by during the late afternoon. Adjacent to our house there are several large salt cedar trees. In years past, thousands utilized one particular tree as thier roost. The arrangement of downward hanging branches must have been appealing to them. A couple of years back one of the major branches on this tree blew down. The monarch stopped using the tree as a roost and would not use adjacent trees. Yesterday about 100 or so were roosting in one of the other large trees. It will be interesting to see if more monarchs begin to use these other trees as roost sites.
