EventMonarch Migration Sighting
Date of Sighting09/18/99
CommentsFort Foster, Kittery Maine. There were thousands and thousands of Monarchs heading south-southwest. I arrived about 11:00 am. I attempted to do a count but after 100 in less than a min I gave up. Throughout the day I was able tag 59 monarchs for Monarch Watch. From one bush alone I was able to net 5 at one time. At one point I just stood on the path with my net raised and waited for one to fly in. At about 5:30 to 6:00 pm many started to roost in an oak and sumac bushes below the oak. I abandoned my net and simply took them off the bushes one at a time to tag. I returned on 9/19/99 sunday at 7:30. There were still several hundrend, but by 10:00 am there were none. I returned several times throughout the day and did not see any.
