Click to see photo of monarchs resting in New Hampton, Iowa. Mowing lawn by the creek on my acarage I spotted 150 Monarchs (roosted) on several maple tree branches. Last night (Sunday 9/12/99) there were over 100 monarchs gathered on 3 branches. No Monarchs roosted Friday night-Saturday morning 9/11/99. I counted 54 on 9/9/99 and on (9/10/99) were 32 as close as I can count--but it was early afternoon and they are quite active and there may be some not settled for the night. I can't tell if they are passing, massing or local. |
