EventRobin (First HEARD singing)
Date of Sighting02/22/12
CommentsOut for an early morning walk from my house to check on one of my geocaches that I have hidden. As I approached the geocache, I heard the familiar sound of a robin singing. Found the robin one block south of me. The time was 6:30 am local- just before sunrise, clear sky, 31 degrees F, winds SW at 7MPH. It was in the highest branch of a small cluster of trees- about 35 feet high. After singing it made the cheee-cheee-cheee sound. The location is several blocks north from the mouth of the Fox River where it enters Lake Winnebago. The ground is still frozen but about 80% of the snow cover is gone. No other robins were spotted or heard during the one mile walk. Odd to see one this early. Spring can't be far away.

February 24
My singing robin to the best of my memory was the true song with tut calls interspersed. This was continuous for over 10 minutes and continued as I walked out of hearing range. I checked last evening and the robin was about 200 yards east of where I first saw him. I only heard a few peek and tut calls. This morning at dawn I saw him near the top of an oak tree, about another 100 yards east. Light snow was falling. I heard a mixture of true song and peek and tut calls. It then flew southwest and I was unable to hear him again. Because he stayed for three days in the area, I am thinking it is establishing a territory.
