| Comments | Monarchs are becoming more numerous in northeast Iowa. We have been
seeing groups of 10-30 in the trees in the evening and have tagged about
60 over two days. The second day, we also recaptured 6 monarchs that
we had tagged the night before. Chip told us a couple years ago that
this was an indication of 'staging' before migration. We've found this
staging to last 1 to 2 weeks. Some years there are lot more monarchs than this year. We have seen a steady number, one every 15- 20 minutes moving in a west, south west direction through here. This is compared to almost no butterflies of any kind all summer!! Contributed to Monarch Watch Migration Highlight |
