EventMonarch Fall Roost
Date of Sighting08/29/04
CommentsI stopped on the north shore of Lake Ontario near Oshawa. About 7 pm, over a period of 1/2 hour, I saw 4 monarchs in typical early evening flight, flying high towards the west and towards trees, looking for a site at which to roost for the night.

I spent some time earlier on Saturday scouring Presqu'ile Provincial Park (on the north shore of Lake Ontario, about 150 km east of Toronto) for monarch eggs, larva and adults. The situation remains grim. I only found 3 fully developed larva, one second instar larva, and spotted 4 adults. Flowering plants and milkweed are abundant. Goldenrod is blooming.
