EventMonarch Migration Sighting
Date of Sighting11/01/03
CommentsNovember 1, 2003
A small number of volunteers were confronted with a large number of monarchs migrating through St. Marks NWR (Gulf Coast of Florida, South of Tallahassee) on Saturday 1 November. Over 1800 were counted on their early morning roost sites, but many more were present and already becoming active (and uncountable) at sunrise. About 500 were caught and tagged. This was the biggest one-day count in the recent years of this project (counts every Wednesday and Saturday morning in October and November until Thanksgiving), and followed a front that dropped heavy rain the preceding Tuesday.

October 22, 2003
The first real pulse of migrants is now coming through Florida's Gulf Coast. Wednesday, October 22 our counting/tagging team counted 417 on early morning roosts and tagged 251.

October 13, 2003
Monarchs have begun migrating through but not in great numbers yet. Only 1 counted and tagged 1 October; 27 counted and 16 tagged 4 October; 22 counted and 14 tagged 8 October.

The seasonal monarch counting and tagging project at St. Marks NWR (coastal Wakulla County, S. of Tallahassee) began again on 1 October and will run Wednesday and Saturday mornings until 26 November.
