EventMonarch PEAK Migration
Date of Sighting10/07/03
Comments Yesterday afternoon, Tues. Oct. 7, 2003 I counted 405 monarchs in just under an hour . It was misting rain, temps mid-50s, low hanging clouds, no wind; mostly powered flight and some gliding, heading S-SW toward Looking Glass Rock on the beautiful Pisgah National Forest. Around 5:30 pm they started to sail around and then into some of the giant red oaks at the overlook, and likely roosted there for the night. Most flew into the oaks where there was some early fall coloration from the anthocyanins, perhaps being interpreted for other aggregating monarchs? I breathed a big sigh of relief as I feared TS Isabel had swept them out to sea from the East Coast areas north of WNC.
