| Event | Monarch Migration Sighting |
| Date of Sighting | 09/30/03 |
| Comments | Denise Gibbs, who has monitored migration at this Atlantic Coast refuge since 1997, expected the first big wave of migration to arrive by 4 pm today.
How can she predict with such precision? Monarchs were reported yesterday 160 miles up the coast, by Dick Walton's monitoring project at Cape May, NJ. Based on past observations and tagging records, with good winds monarch have traveled from Cape May to Chincoteague in just 24 hours. Stay tuned... Thus far this fall, migration monitoring has been extremely slow. During her daily 5 mile surveys she's spotted only a dozen monarchs at most. Similar low numbers have been reported at Cape May.
