EventMonarch Migration Sighting
Date of Sighting10/04/02
CommentsOn the Cerro del Grillo (Cricket Mountain) above our home overlooking the City of Zacatecas, this morning there was one Monarch warming itself in the early light. Tomorrow morning we will return for another observation. This Monarch was at approximately 8400' so it had to work hard to get here coming from any northern direction. There have been exceptionally good rains here this rainy season (June - September), so even here in a semi arid region there is abundant vegetation and water right now.

One monarch is not exactly confirmation of anything, but we have never seen a Monarch in proximity to the city of Zacatecas. We did see many perhaps ten to twenty kilometers south of Conception del Oro on or way to Saltillo and Monterrey two years ago this month. A friend from Moneterrey remarked the other evening that it was very common to see them around Monterrey in the appropriate season, but that area has abundant, almost an indecent amount of butterflies most of the year. Will keep our eyes open for Monarchs in transit.
