| Event | Monarch Migration Sighting |
| Date of Sighting | 09/29/02 |
| Comments | It started out as a beautiful, warm, blue-sky day in the lower elevations around Johnson City. We decided to drive up to the Blue Ridge Parkway (around Pilot Ridge), where the low hanging clouds and cooler temperatures interferred with the sightings we might have seen from this location. In spite of that, we saw 42 monarchs migrating south through the gaps in the mountains and along the ridges, during approximately 4 hour drive.
The hazard of the Parkway's closeness was apparent as we found 3 monarchs that had been hit by cars. That was a sad sight. But one only had to look up or on nearby goldenrod to see the brilliant orange flutterings which could only make you smile. |
