| Comments | We have an isolated oak grove that is in a valley on the family farm. Historically, the second weekend in October is the peak for us (approx. 50 miles NW of Austin). This year we had our peak the first weekend of October. The grove is about the size of a football field, in years past we've tried to count and I would guess around 5,000 monarchs have roosted on good nights. This year it seems like the numbers are down, I would say probably 1500 to 2000 the first weekend, and around 1000 the second weekend. The second weekend was also 5-10 degrees cooler than the first weekend this year. Big cold front is supposed to push through Monday the 15th. I will send another report if I see anything interesting the third weekend. Thanks. |
