EventMonarch PEAK Migration
Date of Sighting09/20/01
CommentsAfter successfully raising several hundred monarchs from eggs this year, I am equally pleased to see such abundant numbers throughout migration. Thursday, Sept. 20 was a peak day in Central Illinois with one, two, and three monarchs at a time coasting into my butterfly garden, one group after another. Their favorite plants appeared to be the butterfly bushes, zinnias, tropical milkweed and water snowball (a pond plant). Unfortunately, they disappear quickly after being captured and tagged. The weather has been cooperative for now, but we are expecting low temps this Sunday. I hope to use up the rest of my 200 tags this weekend (Sept. 22-23). The monarchs and migrating hummingbirds are the only things bringing joy to my life these days after the tragedy out East. I am so thankful for this gift from God.
