| Event | Monarch PEAK Migration |
| Date of Sighting | 09/16/01 |
| Comments | We had several hundred monarchs arrive Sunday night, Sept. 16, and settled into the trees. It rained most of the night and the temperatures were in the 60's today and rainy, so they were grounded all day Monday. They flew around in circles a little but didn't go anywhere. Tonight, Tuesday September 18, many more arrived around 5:00 and now they are dripping off of the trees, waiting for the weather to let up and the temps. to rise - I suppose. We are in south Kansas City, that makes us a little south of Lawrence, Kansas (Monarch Watch) and north of the Baker Wetlands area where they tagged so many Saturday. We had not seen them in any numbers until Sunday night. They are clustered on wild cherry trees (I think). We have about three acres of natural habitat. The monarchs have been stopping by here consistently for 5 years with by far the largest numbers in 1996. Every square foot of air was filled that year. Contributed to Monarch Watch. |
