EventMonarch PEAK Migration
Date of Sighting09/11/01
CommentsDropped by Presqu'ile Provincial Park this afternoon to capture monarchs and found good numbers in the abundant goldenrod. Monarchs were fighting to make progress in the south-westerly winds (which had been out of the north earlier in the day) and congregated in areas with goldenrod that were sheltered by trees. In four hours, I had captured 350 monarchs. Many seemed to have recently hatched as the wings were relatively soft and unhardened. Also seeing monarchs passing through a number of towns and villages along the north shore of Lake Ontario, crossing high above our major 6 and 4 lane expressway (highway 401) that follows in close proximity the north shore of Lake Ontario (and which extends from Windsor in the west all the way to the Quebec border in the east. All soaring in a typical south-westerly direction.
