EventMonarch PEAK Migration
Date of Sighting09/12/01
CommentsThousands of monarchs on the Toronto waterfront
Based on my success yesterday at Presqu'ile Provincial Park, 150 km east of Toronto, after work today I drove down to the Toronto waterfront and Tommy Thompson Park (Leslie Street Spit). Again good numbers of monarchs and I tagged over 200 from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm. As the sun set and I thought the activity was finished for the night, I came across a number of low roosts containing 50+ monarchs each. Other roosts much higher contained more and I suspect down in the park there were probably some large roosts ( primarily on willow, poplar, Manitoba maple and even a small elm). In short, many many more monarchs than I could ever hope to tag. Probably thousands. Many seeking shelter from very strong south-westerly winds.

September 18
After all the movement noted last week at Presqu'ile and Leslie Street Spit (Toronto) and at Port Dover on Lake Erie (Long Point), I think the peak of the migration is over. On Monday, I collected 200 on the Leslie Street Spit, with most being found at the tip of the peninsula. Today at Presqu'ile, things were overcast, almost no wind, and almost no monarchs. Those present seemed focused on migrating and not feeding. The 10 I caught were caught on the fly and were also found at the tip of Owen Point, ready to head off across the lake or to Gull/High Bluff Islands. Our weather will be changing overnight to showers - which are desperately needed. We are still in a Level II drought, and this could be upgraded to a Level III (severe enforced water-use restrictions).

No news of monarchs moving through Point Pelee National Park.
