EventMonarch PEAK Migration
Date of Sighting09/12/01
CommentsIt seems that I am seeing at least one monarch flying at all times in this area. As soon as one disappears, I look around and can find another. On Monday, Sept. 10, I saw a cluster of about 30 butterflys on various limbs in a sheltered wooded area in the City park overlooking the Mississippi River. This was in the city of Clinton, Iowa. Earlier in the day I watched the monarchs as they flew by and most were headed almost due South. On Wednesday, the 12th, I was 10 miles South of Clinton in a county park along the Mississippi River and saw more Monarches clustering on limbs. Once again they weren't on just one limb, but rather scattered in an area that provided protection from the wind. Most of the monarchs on this day were headed in a Westerly direction.
