| Date of Sighting | 09/15/01 |
| Comments | Heavy monarch activity across central Iowa continued, or perhaps a second wave was coming. The heavy numbers over a longer period of days hold out hopes the overall migration is larger this year than it has been in years past. I estimate that I observed 1,000 or more monarchs on this day. In early afternoon in our butterfly garden, I counted 323 monarchs in an hour. Earlier, at Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge, I observed 252 monarchs in 45 minutes. Throughout the day, numerous monarchs were seen along the central Iowa roadways and in our butterfly garden. The day ended at dusk with 25 to 50 monarchs swirling around the trees near our home.
