| Comments | Wow, I've finally SEEN the numbers these guys can form during migration!!
This afternoon (9/8/01) in Vining, IA, 42 degrees N latitude thousands of
Monarchs were observed roosting in Catalpa, Mulberry and assorted evergreens
at the old St. Mary's Church here on the north edge of town. Impossible to
count them-they made the trees look like they were full of brown leaves while
roosting in clumps! Most of the butterflies were nice and large and all
appeared to be very fresh.
Very little nectaring noted at between 2:30 and 3:30 p.m.--primarily roosting
and flying around despite the proximity of flower beds which included much
goldenrod in full bloom. About 2 miles due East, at the old St. Mary's
cemetary, several hundred Monarchs were observed roosting in a row of old
evergreens all along the eastern edge of the cemetary.
