SPOTLIGHT ON

PROGRAM 4: The High Renaissance
Rome and Venice

With Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael, the artist as genius takes center stage. Their works in a variety of media -- painting, sculpture, drawing, and architecture -- define the aesthetic values of the day as well as provide standards of excellence for centuries afterward. The Venetian preoccupation with theatre, nature, and light is captured in glowing works by Giorgione, Titian, and Veronese, while Tintoretto's Last Supper symbolically depicts the social turbulence of late 16th-century Italy.

The Renaissance site mentioned for Program 3 includes a page on Michelangelo. You'll learn about his working relationships with several popes, his close ties to the wealthy Medici family, and his many renowned works, including the Sistine Chapel and David.

This site in Japan features a demonstration of a Renaissance consort and information about the instruments from that time period. You can listen to the consort playing together and hear what each instrument sounds like.
